Types of power pedaling for e-bike:

Power pedaling using a mid-drive motor:

A mid-drive motor is a type of electric bike motor that is located on the bottom bracket of the bike, between the crank arms. The cranks are powered and force is sent through the drivetrain, just like your own legs would move it, with additional assistance.

PROs of power pedaling using a mid-drive motors:
  • Mid-drive motors can produce more power and torque than rear hub motors, which makes them better suited for hill climbing and carrying cargo.
  • Mid drive motors tend to be coherent and have a natural pedalling feel, although they are also more expensive and complex.
  • The efficiency of mid-drive motors is higher than hub-drive motors, which means they can go further on a single battery charge.
  • The mid-drive motors have a smoother ride than the hub motors because the bike’s drivetrain is integrated with them. This means that there is less vibration and noise.
  • Mid-drive motors help the handling of a mountain bike better by distributing the weight more evenly. This is important for cornering and avoiding obstacles.
  • Riding satisfaction:
    • Mid-drive e-bikes offer a smooth riding experience that is more natural and enjoyable than other types of e-bikes.
    • The bike feels more responsive and the weight is balanced because the motor is located in the center of the bike.
    • Riders who prioritize power, torque, and a smooth ride will likely prefer a mid-drive e-MTB. The drawback is more expensive and more difficult to maintain.
    • Furthermore, mid-drive motors have more power and torque, making it easier to climb hills and carry cargo.
CONs of power pedaling using a mid-drive motor:
  • Mid-drive motors have more component parts so they are typically more expensive than hub motors.
  • Mid-drive motors are more complex to install and maintain than hub motors.
  • Not all bike frames are compatible with mid-drive motors.

Power pedaling using a direct drive hub motor:

An electric bike motor that is located in the hub of the wheel is called a direct drive hub motor. The motor’s design is simple, without any gear or other moving parts. Instead, the motor’s shaft is directly connected to the wheel axle.

PROs of power pedaling using a direct drive hub motor:

  • Direct drive hub motors are more reliable and easy to maintain than geared hub motors due to their simpler design.
  • Because there are no gears to create friction, direct drive hub motors are quieter than geared hub motors.
  • Direct drive hub motors have a higher top speed than geared hub motors, making them a good choice for riders who desire to go fast.
  • Regenerative braking can be accomplished by using direct drive hub motors, which generate electricity when braking. By storing this electricity in the battery, you can extend your range.

CONs of power pedaling using a direct drive hub motor:

  • Direct drive hub motors typically have a lower torque output than geared hub motors, which makes them less suitable for climbing hills or carrying heavy loads.
  • The weight of direct drive hub motors is typically heavier than geared hub motors.
  • At low speeds, direct drive hub motors are less efficient than geared hub motors.

Final thought power pedaling using a direct drive hub motor:

Overall, direct drive hub motors are a good choice for riders who want a simple, reliable, and quiet electric bike. They are particularly suitable for riders who plan on doing a lot of flat riding and value regenerative braking.

Popular brands of direct drive hub motors:

  • Golden Motor – (Price: $200-$600): Known for its reliability and durability.

Power pedaling using a geared hub motor:

The geared hub motor is an electric bike motor that is mounted in the hub of the wheel. Due to a gear reduction system inside the motor, it can produce more torque than a direct drive hub motor.

PROs of power pedaling using a geared hub motor:

  • Geared hub motors have a higher torque output than direct drive hub motors, which makes them better suited for climbing hills and carrying heavy loads.
  • At low speeds, geared hub motors are more efficient than direct drive hub motors. This means that you can get more range out of your battery.
  • Geared hub motors are generally cheaper than mid-drive motors.

CONs of power pedaling using a geared hub motor:

  • The design of the geared hub motors is more complex than direct drive hub motors, which makes them more difficult to maintain.
  • Geared hub motors have a louder sound than direct drive hub motors due to the gears inside the motor.
  • Compared to the direct drive hub motors, geared hub motors are less efficient in regenerative braking. This means that you will not be able to recover as much energy when you brake.

Final thought power pedaling using a geared hub motor:

  • Smart Pie – (Price: $200-$500): Known for its compact design and lightweight.

Why some brands prefer customize in-wheel motor rather than hub motor:

An in-wheel motor is an electric bike motor that is located inside the wheel hub.

There are two main types of in-wheel motors:

  • In-wheel direct drive hub motors have no gears and are directly connected to the wheel axle. Despite being more simple and reliable than geared hub motors, they still lack torque and efficiency at low speeds.
  • The gear reduction system inside in-wheel geared hub motors enable them to produce more torque and be more efficient at low speeds. However, they are more complex and less reliable than direct drive hub motors.

PROs of in-wheel motor:

  • Hub motors are usually more expensive to manufacture than in-wheel motors. This has the potential to make e-bikes with in-wheel motors more affordable for consumers.
  • In-wheel motors tend to be lighter than hub motors. E-bikes with in-wheel motors can be more agile and easier to maneuver due to this.
  • In-wheel motors have a simpler design than hub motors. This can make them more reliable and easier to maintain.
  • In-wheel motors do not reduce the bike’s ground clearance as much as hub motors. This can be advantageous for riders who plan on doing a lot of off-road riding.

CONs of in-wheel motor:

  • The torque produced by in-wheel motors are slightly lower than that hub motor. They may not be suitable for frequent climbing hills or carrying heavy loads.
  • At low speeds, in-wheel motors are less efficient than hub motors. This could result in less range from your battery.

Final thought:

In-wheel motors are an excellent choice for electric bike brands looking to offer affordable, lightweight, and easy-to-maintain e-bikes. They are especially well-suited for brands that target riders who plan on doing a lot of flat riding and who do not need a lot of torque.

Popular e-bike brands using in-wheel motors:

    • Hi! Friend, you are right cycling is fantastic. But in the market, flooded with cheap components making the riding not really joyful. Although some top-notch e-bike is expensive, it is worth every dollar you paid for it.

My personal choices are Europe brand mid-drive motor, a UL certified battery, Shimano Groupset, Cloud 9 saddle, 13g spokes wheel, Maxxis or Kenda tires, TEKTRO hydraulic disc brakes and a SUNTOUR front suspension fork for off-road and city road cycling. Due to my age has reached 70, I am no more ready for any mountain biking.

    • Hi! Friend, Thanks for your feedback. Look like you are not sharing any kind of experience you have with the electric bikes. If you read the content carefully, on and off you can find my opinions about each kind of motor. For each post, I can take 3-7 days to complete it with my own experience. Due to your feedback, I have to re-look into it how to present my experience in the content.

I am not so productive like many bloggers who can write 1-3 posts per day with the help of the open AI. I have to think over and over again, what kind of information I want to bring to my users.

Forget about the budget, I recommended young adults to pick mid-drive e-bike but for seniors, hub motor with throttle will be more suitable for them. Lastly, I recommended women using an electric cargo bike to enjoy happy hours with their kids.
